At least 400 homes have been damaged after a water main broke in southwest Detroit, causing widespread flooding before the water quickly froze over in frigid winter weather conditions.
Residents were left trapped in their homes surrounded by water, after the 1.3 metre pipeline ruptured around 3:30am on Monday.
Detroit Police and Fire crews rescued 76 people and 12 pets, as the water level rose high enough to nearly submerge vehicles in some areas.
The local water authority said it will be at least two weeks before the water main is completely back in service.

20日、月曜日の午前3時半頃、直径約1.3メートルの水道管が破裂し、近隣の住民は水没した住宅に閉じ込められた。
一時は路上の車両が水没するほど水位が上昇し、デトロイト市警と市消防が住民76人とペット12頭を救助した。
地元水道局によれば、水道の復旧には少なくとも2週間かかるという。
